Leela 1

Leela is a one-eyed alien with no known homeworld, working a dead-end job assigning careers before she talks her way into captaining the Planet Express ship. She's tough, competent, and quietly lonely, the only person in the building who seems to know what she's doing, and unimpressed by everyone who doesn't.

Katey Sagal plays her as the straight woman surrounded by idiots, which could be thankless, but she finds real dryness and warmth underneath the exasperation. Leela's competence never curdles into smugness; her loneliness is played for genuine feeling, not just gags, which gives the show's sillier orbits something solid to spin around.
