Laurie Garvey

Laurie Garvey was a psychologist before the Sudden Departure took a fraction of the world without warning or explanation. Now she's traded her family and her voice for the Guilty Remnant, a cult of silent, white-clad chain-smokers devoted to reminding everyone that meaning is over. She writes notes instead of speaking, watches her husband and children from a remove she's chosen.

Amy Brenneman plays devastation as discipline rather than collapse, which makes Laurie far stranger and sadder than a typical cult convert. The show never lets you dismiss her choice as madness; it keeps asking what a trained rational mind does when reason no longer explains anything. Her silence carries more argument than most characters' speeches.
