Lance Stater

Lance is half of a modest metal-detecting duo in rural Essex, sweeping fields with his friend Andy in hope of Saxon gold and mostly finding ring pulls. Divorced, easygoing, and quietly wounded, he treats the hobby as both escape and faith — a small, patient hope that something extraordinary is buried nearby.

Toby Jones plays Lance with a gentleness that never tips into pity, finding comedy and ache in the same shrug. The writing gives him disappointment without bitterness, longing without self-pity, and the show trusts him to be funny and sad in the same breath — which Jones does effortlessly.
