The show leans into her flightiness as comedy but never makes her stupid — Michalka plays Lainey as genuinely unbothered by other people's anxieties, which makes her a calm, funny counterweight to the Goldberg household's constant chaos. Her breezy indifference to Barry's devotion is the joke, and she sells it without ever turning cruel.
