Lady Whistledown

Unseen and unnamed, Lady Whistledown is the mysterious author of a scandal sheet that scandalizes and enthralls all of London society. Her pamphlets appear overnight, printed with gossip no one else could know, skewering debutantes and dukes alike. She is arch, omniscient, and utterly anonymous — a voice everyone fears and no one can identify.

Julie Andrews' narration turns pure exposition into pleasure: her crisp, amused delivery makes every barbed aside feel like a shared secret between her and the audience. The character works because she's never seen, only heard — a disembodied wit commenting on romance and hypocrisy with such delicious control that she becomes the show's real authority figure.
