Lady Edith Crawley

The middle Crawley daughter, wedged between glamorous Mary and sweet Sybil, Edith is the one nobody quite notices. She wants to matter — to be loved, to be chosen, to be more than an afterthought at Downton — and her early scheming, tattling and small cruelties come from that ache rather than malice.

Laura Carmichael plays the unglamorous sister with real nerve, letting Edith be petty and wounded without begging for sympathy. The writing takes the family's least-favorite daughter and refuses to let her stay a punchline, tracking her slow, stubborn insistence on a life of her own with a patience that makes every small victory feel hard-won.
