Komano, Tsutomu

Tsutomu Komano arrives at Mizusawa High School as a quiet, awkward first-year, more comfortable with his own interests than with people. Pulled into the fledgling karuta club almost by accident, he seems an unlikely competitor — shy, unassuming, easily flustered — yet he sticks around, drawn in despite himself by the club's oddball energy.

Komano is the show's quiet joke about underestimation: the least imposing member of the room turns out to have a mind built for the game's demands. Tsubasa Yonaga plays him with a mumbling, self-effacing comedy that never curdles into mockery, and Chihayafuru lets his small victories land with real warmth precisely because no one, including him, expected them.
