King of Space is a figure from the guileless world of low-budget, in-universe science fiction that Futurama loves to spoof — a blustering, cardboard-heroic ruler glimpsed on-screen within the show itself, all swagger and stiff dialogue, exactly the kind of cheesy space-opera archetype the Planet Express crew watch and mock.
The joke is the whole point: a character built to be bad on purpose, delivered with David Herman's flat, over-earnest voice work that nails the deadpan seriousness of terrible '50s sci-fi. King of Space opposes the marriage of his son, the Prince of Space, to Leela as she is a commoner. Fry challenges him to a duel, which if Fry loses, will mean his death. The duel is a joust and Leela acts as Fry's champion. She wins the duel but unknowingly, kills the Prince who secretly championed for the King.
