Kinashi, Hiro

Hiro Kinashi is a classmate at Mizusawa High who gets pulled into the karuta club mostly because the team needs a fifth member. He is easygoing, a little nervous, and not obviously suited to a game about memorizing a hundred poems, showing up more out of loyalty to his friends than any burning desire to master competitive karuta.

He works because Chihayafuru needs someone whose stakes are ordinary — not a prodigy, not haunted by a childhood promise, just a guy trying to keep up. Kazuya Nakai plays his jitters and small victories with warm, unforced comic timing, so his slow, unglamorous improvement becomes genuinely moving instead of a punchline.
