Kevin Murphy

Kevin Murphy is the eldest child of the Murphy household, a teenager who wants nothing more than to be a rock star and cares very little for school, chores, or his father's expectations. Lanky, sulky, and perpetually strumming a guitar he's still learning, he drifts through the 1970s suburbs dreaming bigger than his circumstances allow.

Justin Long plays Kevin's obliviousness with real comic commitment, letting him be gloriously, believably dumb about consequences while still sincere in his teenage yearning. The writing uses him as the household's built-in generational clash, a walking rebuke to Frank's blue-collar discipline, and the show mines real warmth from how badly he wants to be someone.
