Josiah Tulkinghorn

Josiah Tulkinghorn is the Dedlock family's solicitor, a black-clad fixture in their grand house who says little and misses nothing. He moves through drawing rooms and legal chambers alike with the same unhurried calm, gathering other people's secrets the way other men collect debts, and giving away none of his own.

Charles Dance plays him almost entirely in stillness — a raised eyebrow, a pause before answering, a voice that never rises above conversational. The writing trusts that restraint to be frightening, and Dance obliges: Tulkinghorn's power lies in what he chooses not to say, and the audience feels every silence as a threat.
