Josh is twenty and adrift, dumped by his girlfriend in the show's opening minutes and told, almost as an aside, that he's gay. He drifts through dinners, an awkward first kiss with a man, and a mother in crisis, meeting each upheaval with a deadpan, slightly baffled politeness rather than any visible panic.

Josh Thomas writes and plays a version of himself that refuses melodrama even when the material earns it — suicide attempts, coming out, heartbreak all land through a flat, funny understatement that somehow makes the pain land harder, not softer. His awkwardness feels observed rather than performed, which is why it's so disarming.
