Josephus "Joe" Aloisus Miller

Miller is a burned-out detective on Ceres Station, working the beat in a battered hat and a coat that's seen better decades. He's assigned to find a missing rich girl, Julie Mao, a job he treats as routine until it isn't. Cynical, drink-worn, and stubbornly moral under the cynicism, he knows the Belt's corners better than its rules.

Thomas Jane plays him as a straight noir detective dropped into hard science fiction, and the friction is the point — the hat and the world-weary drawl feel out of time against space stations, which is exactly what makes him distinct. The writing gives him a case that becomes an obsession, and Jane lets that obsession show as something closer to grief than duty.
