John Thornton

Thornton runs a Milton cotton mill with iron discipline, a man who clawed his way up from nothing and expects the same grit from everyone around him. Proud, guarded, and easily read as cold, he clashes almost immediately with Margaret Hale, the newcomer whose judgments of him sting more than he'll admit.

Armitage plays severity as armor rather than nature, letting small cracks—a held gaze, a swallowed retort—hint at the feeling Thornton refuses to perform. The writing gives him real convictions about work and class before it gives him romance, so his eventual softening feels earned rather than assigned, and his stillness becomes riveting.
