John Rayburn

John Rayburn is a sheriff's deputy in the Florida Keys and the reliable son of the family that runs the Rayburn House, a beachfront inn about to celebrate its thirtieth anniversary. He's steady, well-liked, married with kids — the one who holds things together. When his troubled brother Danny comes home for the celebration, John's careful calm starts to show its edges.

Kyle Chandler plays decency as something effortful rather than natural, and that effort is the whole show. John narrates the family's story in voiceover as the good son, but Chandler lets you see the strain underneath that role long before the plot does — a performance built on what's being held back, not what's said.
