John Irvin

John Irvin mans the front desk of the 15th Precinct, answering phones and keeping the detectives' paperwork straight with unflappable competence. He is polite, precise, and easy to underestimate — the civilian aide who notices everything while everyone else rushes past him toward the next case.

The show trusts Brochtrup's stillness to do the work: John absorbs casual homophobia from some of the detectives without becoming a lesson or a martyr, just a guy doing his job well. That restraint, rare for network television at the time, is what makes him feel real rather than symbolic.
