John Bates

John Bates arrives at Downton Abbey as Lord Grantham's new valet, an old army friend given the post out of loyalty rather than convenience. He walks with a limp and says little about his past. Some of the staff distrust him instantly; he simply gets on with the work, patient and watchful.

Brendan Coyle plays him almost entirely through restraint — a held gaze, a slow exhale — so that decency reads as strength rather than passivity. The writing surrounds him with sneering rivals and class suspicion, and Bates never raises his voice to answer them, which makes his quiet insistence on doing right feel like the most stubborn thing in the house.
