Joe Coffey

Joe Coffey works patrol out of the Hill Street station, partnered with Bobby Hill, a young detective trying to build a clean record in a family with a complicated police history. Earnest and ambitious, he wants to do right by the badge, chafing against departmental politics and the weight of a surname that precedes him into every room.

Ed Marinaro plays him with an open, guileless sincerity that cuts against the show's cynicism, a cop who still believes the job can be honest even as the ensemble around him suggests otherwise. The tension between his idealism and his family's compromised legacy gives the character a quiet, sustained pressure worth watching build.
