Joanie Stubbs

Joanie runs the deception at the Bella Union for Cy Tolliver, dressing girls up as untouched novelties for wealthy marks. She is sharp, guarded, and visibly worn down by the work she does well. Beneath the composed surface there's a hunger to be free of Cy and of the camp's uses for her.

Kim Dickens plays intelligence as exhaustion rather than swagger, letting Joanie's competence read as a cage rather than a triumph. The writing never lets her cruelty go unpunished by her own conscience, and Dickens finds the flinch under the professionalism, making a supporting player feel like someone with a whole interior life.
