Jessica Huang is a fiercely protective mother who has just moved her family from a tight Chinatown community in Washington, D.C. to the strange suburban sprawl of Orlando, Florida. Blunt, calculating, and utterly unimpressed by American niceties, she manages her household budget, her sons, and her opinions with the same unyielding precision.

Constance Wu refuses to soften Jessica into a sitcom mom stereotype — she plays the sharp edges straight, letting the comedy come from conviction rather than self-awareness. The writing trusts her contradictions: ruthless and tender, rigid and shrewd, always certain she's right, which makes her hilarious and, improbably, moving.
