Jesse leads Jackson's patrols with a calm, practical competence, the kind of man who checks the perimeter twice and never raises his voice doing it. He's steady, dryly funny when he lets himself be, and quietly still hung up on Dina even as he does right by everyone around him, including Ellie.

Young Mazino plays him without a trace of the wounded-ex cliché you'd expect — Jesse's decency reads as strength, not weakness, and his competence never curdles into self-importance. The show trusts him to be the reasonable adult in a world short on those, and Mazino makes that restraint feel like its own kind of charisma.
