Jenny Huang

Jenny Huang is Louis's mother, living under the same roof as her son's young family in Orlando. She mostly speaks Mandarin, delivered with subtitles, and watches the household's chaos with a dry, unimpressed eye. She wants respect and a little peace, and rarely raises her voice to get either.

The joke is structural: her sharpest lines arrive in subtitles while everyone around her babbles in English, so the show hands her comic authority just by letting her go quiet. Lucille Soong plays that stillness beautifully, landing a withering aside with barely a flicker, which makes her the driest, funniest person in any room she's in.
