Jen Harding

Jen Harding is a Laguna Beach realtor and mother of two, freshly widowed and furious about it. She smokes, drinks wine like water, and snaps at strangers in a grief support group where she meets a relentlessly upbeat woman named Judy. Underneath the temper is someone barely holding her house and her kids together.

Applegate plays rage as the honest shape of grief instead of a character flaw to be smoothed over, and the writing lets Jen be genuinely cutting without losing the audience's sympathy. The comedy comes from how precisely she can wound someone in five words; the ache comes from how much she needs the friendship anyway.
