He carries none of the guardedness Mia wears in the present timeline.

Luke Bracey plays him as an uncomplicated pleasure amid a story built on withheld information, and that contrast is the point: every scene with Jamie is a small vacation from Mia's careful self-protection, which makes the choices she eventually makes land with more weight. He's charm used structurally, not decoratively.
