Jake Peralta

Jake Peralta is the Nine-Nine's best detective and its biggest child, a Die Hard-quoting hotshot who treats police work like a game he intends to win. He mainlines junk food, wears leather jackets unironically, and needles his new captain, Ray Holt, at every turn — brilliant at his job, allergic to structure.

Samberg's motormouth energy could easily curdle into pure obnoxiousness, but the writing keeps grounding Jake's antics in real competence and real feeling underneath the bravado. The joke is never that he's an idiot — it's that he's a gifted goofball slowly discovering that caring about people and being disciplined aren't the same as being boring.
