Jack Trotter

Jack Trotter works as a footman in the Russell household, quietly attentive to his duties but with an inventive mind that reaches well beyond the servants' hall. He tinkers in his off hours, nursing an idea he hopes might actually make him money and lift him out of service altogether. Eager and a little shy, he watches for his chance.

Ben Ahlers plays him with an unforced warmth that makes his ambition sympathetic rather than grasping — you want the tinkering to pay off precisely because he never acts entitled to it. The show uses him to test whether Gilded Age striving can exist below stairs too, and his low-key decency makes that question land softly instead of preachily.
