Hugh Crain

Hugh Crain, as we find him in the present day, is a quiet, careworn man living apart from most of his grown children, who blame him for the fractured, grief-marked family he raised. He deflects their questions about the house they fled decades ago, offering apology instead of answers, clearly carrying something he refuses to name.

Timothy Hutton plays him almost entirely in the register of suppressed grief, a man so practiced at absorbing his children's anger that his stillness becomes its own kind of tension. The writing withholds his knowledge just enough that every calm, evasive answer feels like it's costing him something.
