Hugh

Hugh belongs to the Danebury Metal Detecting Club, another quiet enthusiast tramping across muddy fields in search of buried treasure and, more often, ring-pulls. He turns up to meetings, listens more than he talks, and shares the same patient, slightly hopeless devotion to the hobby as everyone else in the group.

Divian Ladwa plays him with the same deadpan gentleness that makes the whole club so endearing — a small, specific presence in an ensemble built on understatement. The comedy of Detectorists never comes from big moments, and Hugh's low-key contributions to the group's chatter and rivalries are part of what makes the club feel like a real, slightly ridiculous, lovable little world.
