Hoban "Wash" Washburne

Alan Tudyk plays him as the crew's ballast: funny without being a clown, competent without swagger, tender in ways that never announce themselves. The writing uses him to puncture tension at exactly the right moments, and Tudyk's timing makes every deadpan line land like it cost him nothing, which is the trick.
