Henry Talbot

Henry Talbot arrives at Downton as a friend of a friend, charming and self-deprecating, with a fortune far smaller than his manners suggest and a passion for motor racing that alarms everyone who likes him. He is drawn to Mary Crawley almost immediately, undeterred by her coolness or her rank, and pursues her with patient, unshowy persistence.

Matthew Goode plays him as genuinely light where the show is often heavy, a man who flirts without cruelty and jokes without malice, which makes him a relief rather than a threat. The writing lets his one real vice, speed, sit quietly under all that charm, giving the courtship an undertow of risk that never needs spelling out.
