Harada, Hideo

Harada Hideo is the elderly karuta teacher who first opens the game's world to a young Arata, running his classes with quiet patience despite being confined to a wheelchair. He speaks of karuta not as competition but as something closer to devotion, and his calm authority draws children into a discipline they don't yet understand.

He works because the show treats him as a source rather than a device: his stillness and frailty are contrasted with the fierce, almost spiritual seriousness with which he discusses poetry and play. Unshō Ishizuka gives him a gravel-soft warmth that makes his belief in the game feel earned rather than sentimental, and it's contagious.
