Guthrum

Guthrum in The Last Kingdom (2015), played by Thomas W. Gabrielsson.

Guthrum is a Danish warlord positioning himself among the fractious Norse earls carving up England, more calculating than the brutal Ubba or restless Ragnarsson brothers around him. He wants Wessex, and he wants the other Danish leaders united behind him to take it, watching alliances and omens with equal attention.

Gabrielsson plays him as a politician among warriors, someone who reads the room and the gods with the same shrewd patience, which makes him feel more dangerous than the men who simply swing axes. There's a stillness to him, a sense of calculation happening just behind the eyes, that keeps you unsure what he'll do next.

Guthrum or Guthrum the Unlucky (later known as Æthelstan of East Anglia) was a main character and former antagonist in both The Saxon Stories novel series, and The Last Kingdom television series. During The Last Kingdom, he acts as the secondary antagonist of Season 1, an unseen ally in Season 2 and a posthumous character since Season 3.
