Guinevere Beck

Beck is a grad student and aspiring writer who wanders into Joe's bookstore one afternoon and, without knowing it, into his obsession. She's smart, self-doubting, chronically online, and hungry for someone to see her as exceptional — which makes her exactly the kind of attention Joe is eager to supply.

The show's whole trick is filtering Beck through Joe's narration, so we see her as he wants us to: a fantasy assembled from Instagram posts and secondhand texts. Elizabeth Lail plays against that flattening, giving Beck messy ambition and real self-awareness, so the gap between his version of her and her actual self becomes the story's quiet horror.
