Granville

Granville is the put-upon shop boy and nephew to the miserly Arkwright, stuck behind the counter of a cramped corner shop, forever fetching, delivering and dreaming of a life beyond the till. He's young, restless and mildly rebellious, nursing crushes and ambitions his uncle has no intention of funding.

David Jason gives Granville a physical comedy of frustration — the stammer, the bicycle, the long-suffering sighs — that turns small indignities into real pathos. He's the audience's stand-in against Arkwright's penny-pinching, and his yearning for something more makes the shop's smallness funnier and sadder at once.
