Grace Burgess arrives in Small Heath as a new barmaid at the Garrison, all poise and quiet composure amid the noise and grime of the pub. She sings beautifully, watches everything, and gives almost nothing away. Tommy Shelby notices her immediately — and so does the audience, sensing there is more to her than the job lets on.
Annabelle Wallis plays Grace as a held breath — elegant, self-contained, always slightly apart from the room she's in. The writing gives her secrets without tipping its hand, and Wallis lets you watch her calculate in real time while appearing merely gracious. She becomes the one person Tommy can't fully read, which makes her irresistible to him and to us.
Grace Helen Shelby (née Burgess) is an Irish woman, who takes up employment as a barmaid at the Garrison Pub and secretly operated as an undercover agent for the Birmingham police. Her mission involved getting close to Thomas Shelby in order to retrieve stolen weaponry. She worked under Inspector Campbell, who used to know her late father, and she claims to be trained as a secret operative.
