GJ arrives in the small New Zealand town leading a ragtag group of women camped out in shipping containers by the lake, a settlement she calls Paradise. Grey-haired, blunt, unbothered by convention, she dispenses cryptic wisdom to the broken and searching who gather around her, watching everyone with flat, amused detachment.

Holly Hunter plays her almost entirely without warmth, which is what makes her mesmerizing rather than merely quirky guru-adjacent scenery. GJ refuses to comfort anyone, refuses to explain herself, and the show trusts Hunter's stillness to suggest someone who has simply stopped pretending wisdom needs kindness attached to it.
