Frieren

An elf mage who has outlived the human companions who once traveled with her to defeat the Demon King, Frieren drifts through a world she experiences on a timescale nothing else shares. She collects grimoires, teaches magic, and moves through her long life with quiet detachment, only slowly registering what she lost.

Tanezaki plays her flat and unhurried, which is the joke and the ache of the show at once: a woman so long-lived that ordinary grief arrives decades late. Watching that placid surface crack open, almost imperceptibly, into something like mourning is the quiet, devastating pleasure of the series.
