Fred Mertz

Fred Mertz is Lucy and Ricky's landlord and downstairs neighbor, married to Ethel. He's tight with a dollar, quick to grumble, and rarely enthusiastic about whatever scheme is brewing upstairs. Underneath the crankiness, he's loyal to his friends and can't quite resist getting pulled into their antics anyway.

Frawley plays the grouch without ever losing warmth underneath it, so Fred's stinginess and eye-rolling become comfort rather than irritation. His bickering marriage with Ethel gives the show a second, older-couple rhythm to bounce off Lucy and Ricky's, and his deadpan reactions to chaos are often funnier than the chaos itself.
