Sophia Taylor Ali plays Fatin's armor with such conviction that the cracks feel earned rather than telegraphed. The writing gives her a cello, a reputation, and a mouth full of deflection, and Ali uses all three to suggest someone performing confidence because the alternative is unbearable. Her comic timing never undercuts the ache underneath.
