Father John Patrick Francis Mulcahy

Father Mulcahy is the camp chaplain at the 4077th, a soft-spoken priest who tends to souls amid the chaos of a surgical unit. He performs Mass, hears confessions no one quite wants to make, and generally gets overlooked in the mess-tent din. Gentle and self-effacing, he keeps trying anyway, hoping to matter.

The show could easily have made him a punchline or a plaster saint; instead it lets him be quietly, stubbornly good, and William Christopher plays that goodness without a trace of smugness. His humor is dry rather than pious, his patience real, and the writing rewards him, gradually, with moments where his faith actually does something in a place built to test it.
