Father John Hughes

Father Hughes arrives in Birmingham as a soft-voiced parish priest, taking confession and offering counsel to Michael Gray with a gentle, patient manner. He asks careful questions about the Shelby family, listens more than he speaks, and carries himself with a stillness that reads as holy devotion — or something else entirely.

Considine plays him at a murmur, all patience and mild eye contact, so the menace has to be inferred rather than shown. That restraint is the performance: a man who never raises his voice becomes the show's most unsettling presence, because you're never quite sure what his calm is covering.
