Eustace Chapuys

Eustace Chapuys arrives at Henry VIII's court as the Holy Roman Emperor's ambassador, a sharp-eyed diplomat devoted to the cause of the wronged Queen Katherine. He watches the king's scandalous marital politics with wit and disapproval, writing dispatches home while cultivating a wary, oddly warm rapport with Thomas Cromwell, the man he suspects of driving it all.

Mathieu Amalric plays him as a courtier who never stops performing courtliness even while seething with moral objection, and the comedy of his stilted English and needling asides makes him instantly companionable. He works because his friendship with Cromwell feels genuine and adversarial in the same breath — two clever outsiders sizing each other up.
