Eugene Porter

Eugene arrives as a mulleted, softly-spoken scientist with a story that could save humanity: he claims to know the cause of the outbreak and a cure waiting in Washington. He hides behind big words and bigger claims, letting others do the fighting while he coasts on being useful, or seeming to be.

The mullet and the monotone are the joke, but McDermitt plays the fear underneath so precisely that Eugene never becomes pure comic relief. He's a coward dressed as an asset, and the slow reveal of what he actually is versus what he claims makes every scene with him quietly tense.
