Ethel Parks

Ethel arrives at Downton as a new housemaid with sharper ambitions than the job allows. She flirts, primps, and chafes against the rigid hierarchy below stairs, more interested in officers and adventure than in earning Mrs Hughes's approval. She wants a bigger life than service was ever built to give her.

Amy Nuttall plays Ethel's restlessness as appetite rather than vanity, a hunger for a life outside the servants' hall that the script treats with real sympathy instead of moral tidiness. Downton often punishes ambition in its women, and Ethel's headstrong refusal to shrink herself makes her one of the show's more quietly daring creations.
