Elena Richardson

Elena Richardson is a wife, mother of four, and part-time journalist in Shaker Heights, Ohio, a town she loves precisely because it runs on rules and planning. She rents a house to newcomer Mia Warren, certain that helping others simply means showing them how to live properly, her way.

Witherspoon plays her without a wink of self-awareness, which is the trick: Elena believes her own righteousness completely, so her control reads as generosity until it doesn't. The writing lets her be genuinely kind and genuinely suffocating in the same breath, which is far more unsettling than a simple villain.
