Edward Millward

A Welsh language scholar at Aberystwyth, brought in to tutor the young Prince Charles ahead of his investiture as Prince of Wales. Millward is a committed Welsh nationalist, wary of the monarchy and the political theatre he's being asked to serve, and he makes no secret of the tension in the arrangement.

The Crown is at its best when it lets an outsider needle the institution from inside a scene, and Millward is exactly that irritant — principled, unimpressed by royal deference, teaching a future king a language and a history that doesn't always flatter the crown. Mark Lewis Jones plays him with dry, unshowy conviction, never softening into charm for the audience's comfort.
