Character

Edward

Edward in The Last Kingdom (2015), played by Timothy Innes.

Edward is Alfred of Wessex's son and heir, a young man raised in the shadow of his father's piety and ambition. Earnest and a little uncertain of himself, he wants to prove worthy of the crown he is meant to inherit, torn between his own desires and the weight of what Wessex expects of him.

Timothy Innes plays Edward as a young man visibly straining under expectation, never quite as sure or as commanding as his father, which makes his growth feel earned rather than assumed. The show lets him be awkward and stubborn before it lets him be capable, and Innes finds real tension in that slow, uneven maturing.

Edward of Wessex is a main character in both The Saxon Stories novel series, and The Last Kingdom television series. During "The Last Kingdom", he acts as one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside King Alfred) in Season 3, the overarching protagonist in Season 4 and the anti-hero of Season 5. He is also a major posthumous character in the Seven Kings Must Die film.
