Dream Summer

A projection of Summer conjured inside one of the show's fabricated realities, Dream Summer looks and sounds like the real thing but exists only within someone else's construct — an idealized, untroubled version of a teenager who is, elsewhere, sharper-edged and more skeptical than this.

The joke depends on Spencer Grammer playing against her own established voice for Summer — sweeter, blanker, a little too agreeable — so the artificiality registers before anyone explains it. It's a neat bit of self-parody: the show using its own actor to needle what a 'perfect' version of a character would actually feel like.
