Dr. Sledge

Dr. Sledge is Eugene's father, a physician back home in Mobile, Alabama, and a veteran of the first war himself. He watches his son's eagerness to enlist with quiet alarm, trying gently to talk him out of it, aware in ways his son isn't yet of what combat actually does to a young man.

He works because the show doesn't need him to do much beyond sit still and be afraid for his boy. O'Farrell plays that fear without melodrama — a doctor's clinical understanding of trauma pressed up against a father's helplessness — and it gives The Pacific its clearest window into what the home front actually feared.
