Dr. Robert 'Bob' Hartley

Bob Hartley is a Chicago psychologist with a small private practice, a cozy apartment, and a wife named Emily he adores without much fuss. He spends his days fielding an office full of neurotic, oddball patients and his evenings with equally odd friends and neighbors, staying calm, dry, and faintly exasperated through all of it.

Newhart built a whole comic persona out of restraint — the deadpan stammer, the one-sided phone calls, the sense that he's the only sane person in every room. Bob works because he's the straight man elevated to lead status: his patience and mild bewilderment let everyone around him be as absurd as they want.
